PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise color makes fashion statement

Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries announced PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the color of the year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a color that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors. With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other color in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens.

In fashion, Turquoise makes a statement that can look elegant and dressy in fine silk and gemstones, or casual and fun in cotton and athletic apparel. Because of its versatility, Turquoise is a great accent color in jewelry, purses, shoes, hair accessories and even nail polish for women, and ties, shirts and sportswear for men.

For brides wanting a flattering choice for attendant apparel and accessories on their big day, Turquoise is now one of the nearly 200 PANTONE WEDDING Colors available from Dessy, a leading manufacturer of bridesmaid, social occasion and flower girl dresses, as well as destination wedding gowns under the labels Dessy Collection, After Six, Alfred Sung, Lela Rose Bridesmaid and Sandals Destination Wedding Dresses. JDS Solutions helps Shoe Palace beat downturn

Shoe Palace, headquartered in San Jose, CA, looks back at 2009 as a year of rapid growth, as many retailers found themselves downsizing, or closing their businesses all together during one of the toughest economic times since the Great Depression.

“Shoe Palace has shown incredible growth since we began working with the company in 2006, and this year has been no exception,” said Dan Friedman, President of JDS Solutions, a premier provider of retail management software. “We work closely with our clients to make sure we are responsive to their individual needs. Shoe Palace is going through many changes due to their rapid growth; our instant availability to both support and development has helped to this end,” explained Friedman.

Shoe Palace is currently opening its 24th store in Ontario, California, the 12th Shoe Palace store opening in 2009 statewide. “This year has been an opportunistic time for those retailers who see themselves in this for the long run,” said George Mersho, whose family opened the first Shoe Palace store 15 years ago in San Jose, CA. “As we add more stores, our technology needs and requirements change,” explained Mersho.

Nike and Kobe launch new Zoom Kobe V, Lower & Lighter

Nike and Kobe Bryant announced the debut of the Nike Zoom Kobe V, the brand’s lowest-profile and lightest basketball shoe to date. Bryant challenged Nike to make his signature shoe even lighter and lower than the Nike Zoom Kobe IV he debuted during his 2008-2009 championship season. Nike responded with the Nike Zoom Kobe V, which features a 10 mm forefoot profile and weighs 10.6 ounces – one ounce lighter than the Nike Zoom Kobe IV.

“I wanted to push the envelope with a shoe that meets the demands of my style of play,” Bryant said. “The Kobe V is lighter, lower and more stable. Nike has done it again.”

Different sports, similar demands

The initial inspiration for Kobe’s low-profile shoe came from an unexpected place: the soccer field. “I watch a lot of soccer and have seen how the best footballers in the world make sharp cuts at top speed in lightweight, low-cut footwear,” Bryant said. “The demands they make on their feet and ankles aren’t that different from what I’m doing on the court, yet nobody assumes they should play in high tops.”

With Bryant’s observation as inspiration, the Nike Sports Research Lab conducted hundreds of hours of testing to create a low-profile shoe that did not compromise stability or lockdown. By modifying the medial arch and sculpting the external heel counter, Nike researchers created a shoe with exceptional performance that moves with the foot and allows for multi-directional cutting. An enhanced outrigger provides lateral stability, while the de-coupled heel maximizes contact surface. The shoe also features a glass/carbon fiber weave shank plate for mid-foot control and rigidity.

“The journey from a high-top to a low-top basketball shoe is far more complex than simply cutting off the ankle collar, as we demonstrated with the Nike Zoom Kobe IV,” said Matt Nurse, Senior Researcher with the Nike Sports Research Lab. “With the Kobe V we constructed an even lighter-weight support system that provides superior, one-to-one lockdown while moving with the foot, not against it.”

Lightweight performance technologies evolved

Building off the success of the Nike Zoom Kobe IV, Nike Performance Footwear Creative Director Eric Avar wanted to further reduce the weight of the shoe while still enhancing support and stability.

“For the Kobe V, we started with the science and performance elements and built from there,” Avar said. “We wanted this shoe to be a true reflection of his game and persona. As Kobe continues to evolve as an athlete, so will the footwear we create for him.”

Irregular Choice chooses Eurostop easy stock management

Cult footwear designer Irregular Choice, commonly known by many as ‘The Viagra of the shoe industry’, has selected Eurostop retail management and EPOS systems for its rapidly growing e-commerce business and international store expansion. Irregular Choice has already installed the Eurostop system at its internet and clearance store in Brighton and has plans to roll it out to the company’s flagship stores in Carnaby Street, London and New York during 2010.

After a rigorous evaluation of four vendors in the marketplace, Irregular Choice chose Eurostop to replace the original PayGo system for its ease of use, aesthetic look and feel, round-the-clock worldwide support, the ability to integrate with and link together all POS tills and offer multi-currency options at the click of a button.

Lee Carpenter-Johnson, Head of Global Retail Operations at Irregular Choice, commented: “Eurostop came out the overall winner. It was the only company that could show a live working demonstration and their product knowledge was fantastic. The system is very user-friendly and has been well-received by staff. In fact, it is so easy to use that we intend to install it ourselves when we introduce it to our stores in London and New York next year.”

Carpenter-Johnson continued: “Typically, we introduce 500 new products every season and details of every product have to be scanned, loaded into our stock-taking software and tracked so that we can offer an efficient ordering and delivery experience to our customers. We also need to price our merchandise in UK sterling and US dollars. With Eurostop, we don’t have to programme our tills differently in each country. We can enter multiple currencies and sell directly at the click of a button. All we have to do is switch on the tills. Eurostop provides us with a fully integrated system than can download and update our stock information quickly and in the format we want.”

The Eurostop system provides comprehensive management reporting and enables the retailer to control all inventory centrally from one location. In future, Irregular Choice intends to expand the use of the Eurostop system to its full capacity, linking together all stores and removing all manual processes completely.

Currently, all stock data is processed and amalgamated in China overnight for use by head office the following morning. When the Eurostop system is deployed in London and New York during 2010, Irregular Choice will have access to all data in real-time providing more accurate management of stock levels and inventory and resulting in significant savings for the business longer-term.
